40 Positive Affirmations For Body Image

Regardless of your size, it's not always easy to love the body you're in—especially in a world that constantly bombards women with unrealistic beauty standards (not to mention the rampant fatphobia in the media and medical fields, which often gets internalized).

For many, the mirror reflects not just a body, but years of self-criticism, comparison, and doubt. I know when I look in the mirror, I scrutinize every "flaw" I see, imagining how I would feel if my appearance changed drastically overnight.

But what if you could rewrite that narrative, one thought at a time? That's where positive affirmations for body image come in. These types of affirmations can help you shift your mindset and encourage a more compassionate relationship with your body. However, if poor body image is causing you to engage in disordered eating and exercise, I strongly encourage you to seek professional help from a therapist or dietitian. Speaking from experience, it wasn't until I unpacked the reasons behind my poor body image in therapy that I was able to eat and exercise normally again.

What Are Positive Affirmations?

Positive affirmations are short, uplifting statements that can help replace negative thoughts with empowering ones. They work by interrupting self-critical patterns and reframing your inner dialogue in a more compassionate and constructive way. Think of them as a way to hit the reset button on negative self-talk.

Here's an example. Instead of thinking, "I hate the way I look," you might say to yourself, "I am learning to accept my body as it is." Over time, these positive body image affirmations can create a ripple effect, influencing how you feel, act, and view yourself.

Why Positive Affirmations Work For Body Image

Remember that negative self-talk I mentioned? It often stems from societal pressures, past experiences, or feelings of inadequacy. Positive affirmations can help counteract these negative influences by focusing on self-acceptance and gratitude.

When you repeat positive affirmations regularly, you start to rewire your thought processes to focus on positive aspects of your body instead of fixating on perceived flaws. It also helps build resilience against external pressures, like social media comparisons or unsolicited advice about your weight (and let me tell you, people LOVE to give unsolicited advice about people's weight—especially at the beginning of the year, when the "new year, new me" vibe is strong).

How To Use Positive Affirmations For Body Image

Incorporating positive affirmations into your daily routine doesn't have to be complicated. Here's how I recommend starting:

  1. Identify negative thoughts: Start paying more attention to your inner dialogue. What are the negative recurring thoughts about your body? These will help guide the affirmations you choose.

  2. Choose meaningful affirmations: If they don't resonate with you, you won't use them. Be sure to choose affirmations that feel authentic to you and address the specific body image struggles you're experiencing.

  3. Practice daily: Repeat your affirmations every day, ideally at a consistent time, like in the morning or before bed. Saying your affirmations in front of a mirror or writing them in a journal can make them even more effective.

  4. Pair with mindfulness: Combine positive affirmations for body image with mindfulness exercises like deep breathing or body scans to anchor them in the present moment.

Overcoming Common Challenges With Affirmations

I get it—speaking to yourself in the mirror can feel REALLY awkward, especially when you're just starting out. But affirmations can be incredibly impactful once you get past the initial discomfort. If the words feel untrue, remember that affirmations are about planting the seeds of change—they don't have to feel authentic immediately.

Another common challenge is staying consistent. Try setting a daily reminder on your phone to remind you to say your affirmations. You could also try a technique called "habit stacking," which pairs a new habit with a habit you do every day. For example, you could say a positive affirmation after you brush your teeth in the morning and evening.

The Bigger Picture: Building a Positive Relationship With Your Body

As much as I love affirmations and see them as a valuable tool, they're just one piece of the ever-changing body image puzzle. Building a positive relationship with your body also involves setting boundaries with harmful media, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and practicing self-care.

Speaking from personal and professional experience, body image struggles don't disappear overnight. But with small, intentional steps like affirmations, letting go of thinness as a goal, engaging in joyful movement, and ditching diets, you can create a solid foundation for long-lasting self-acceptance.
